The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has launched three initiatives aimed at enhancing sport horse welfare, following the tragic incident surrounding Chromatic BF, who died during the 2024 World Cup Jumping Final. These initiatives aim to address key concerns raised by this event and promote better practices within equestrian sports.
Key Initiatives Include:
1. **Revised Horse Participation Consent Agreement**: New conditions will require that no medications be administered by team veterinarians during international competitions without prior consent from the athlete, except in emergencies.
2. **Education Program for Team Veterinarians**: In partnership with the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), USEF will create a continuing education program focused on advanced knowledge in sport medicine and horse welfare, covering topics like emerging therapies and pharmacology.
3. **Chromatic BF Education/Research Fund**: To honor Chromatic BF, USEF will establish a philanthropic fund supporting research aimed at enhancing the welfare of high-performance equine athletes.
USEF’s Chief Operating Officer, Sonja Keating, and CEO Bill Moroney emphasized the importance of these steps in safeguarding horse health and ensuring that the loss of Chromatic BF contributes to more effective protective measures for sport horses in the future. The initiatives reflect a proactive approach in response to identifying and mitigating risks within the sport.
