Oropouche Virus Makes First Appearance in Europe Following Deaths in Brazil

– The Oropouche virus, linked to sloths and spread by midges, has been detected in Europe for the first time.
– In June and July, 19 cases were reported in Europe: 12 in Spain, 5 in Italy, and 2 in Germany.
– The virus is typically transmitted through insect bites, particularly from mosquitoes, and originates from pale-throated sloths, non-human primates, and birds.
– No vaccine exists, and symptoms include headaches, nausea, muscle pain, and sometimes severe complications. Though recovery is common, two fatalities were noted in Brazil.
– Travelers to areas with outbreaks, especially Cuba, face a moderate risk of infection. The ECDC advises precautions such as wearing protective clothing and using insect repellent.
