Travelers Urged to Stay Alert as Oropouche Virus Spreads in Latin America

Travelers returning from Latin America are urged to exercise caution following 19 confirmed cases of Oropouche virus in Europe, particularly in Spain, Italy, and Germany. These infections originated from visitors returning from Cuba and Brazil, where the virus is actively spreading.

– In July, 15 cases in Spain, 5 in Italy, and 2 in Germany were reported.
– The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) warns of a moderate threat in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, and Cuba, highlighting potential risks of stillbirths and birth defects linked to the virus.
– Over 7,000 cases have been reported in Brazil alone this year, and Cuba has confirmed 74 cases since May.
– Symptoms include fever, rash, headaches, and joint pain, appearing 3-8 days post-infection.
