– Rowing is now the 22nd sport sponsored by the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the 13th women’s sport to receive an SEC Championship.
– The announcement was made following a unanimous vote by SEC athletics directors on August 23, 2024.
– Currently, Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas sponsor rowing programs.
– An SEC Championship can be conducted with at least 25% of conference members sponsoring the sport.
– SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey stated that the addition of Oklahoma and Texas enhances the conference’s rowing championship experience.
– The inaugural SEC Rowing Championship is scheduled for May 2025 at a yet-to-be-determined location.
– Prior to this, Alabama and Tennessee competed in the Big 12 championships since 2014-15, after leaving Conference USA.
